BG Deshmukh CSR Award for Cummins India

MUMBAI: Cummins India has been awarded the BG Deshmukh Award for exhibiting effective corporate social responsibility (CSR) by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).  MCCIA gives the BG Deshmukh award for contribution in terms of social development by corporations ans businessmen. Cummins has been given this award for its work in 3 areas – setting up a rice mill for villagers in Padarwadi (about 100 km from Pune), scholarships to the tune of Rs 35 lakh for 55 needy students and gave away 700 stoves to village women.

The rice mill project commissioned in an off-grid setting works on a generator that uses renewable sources such as vegetable oils and biogas from cattle dung, kitchen waste and oil cakes instead of diesel. Easy availability of these elements in the rural settings ensures that the project remains viable in the face of rising fossil fuel costs. Cummins has executed this project with the support of the NGO, Maharashtra Arogya Mandal.

Ravichandran Subramanian, head of CSR, Cummins India says “Cummins has been a pioneer in the field of socially responsible activities and have been working in the areas of energy and environment, higher education and local infrastructure development.”

The BG Deshmukh award is given to entrepreneurs for their contribution in terms of social development by MCCIA.

“This is the fourth year of the BG Deshmukh award. Cummins has done stupendous work and has proved their social responsibility as a corporate,” assistant secretary of MCCIA, KM Manke told.
