DHEKANAL (Odisha): In a bid to inculcate safety consciousness among its employees and contract staff, GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL), which is setting up 1,400 MW coal-based thermal power plant at Kamalanga in Dhenkanal District, has observed the 41st National Safety Week at its project site.
The Safety Week, which was observed at GKEL from 4th to 10th March 2012, commemorates the establishment of the National Safety Council of India. “Ensure safe and Healthy Working Environment – A Fundamental right” is the theme chosen for the 41st National Safety Week nationwide.
Speaking on the occasion after hoisting the Safety Flag, Mr. Jayanta Kumar Panigrahi, Associate Vice President and Project Coordinator, GKEL, highlighted various project-wide safety measures undertaken by GKEL.
“Our workmen are our assets and their safety is our responsibility. GKEL is conscious of safety of not only its own employees, but also of its EPC contractor and sub-contractors working at the project site. Safe working is indispensable for industries and society. We should rededicate ourselves to the cause of safety both at professional and personal level of life,” Mr. Panigrahi said. “An individual needs to be cautious in life as most of the deaths occur due to carelessness,” he added.
Besides Mr. Zhao Zhenging, Project Manager, SEPCO-2, and Mr. Susanta Kumar Sahoo, Associate General Manager (Environment, Health and Safety), GKEL, the event was witnessed by all GKEL employees besides staff and workers of SEPCO-2, the Chinese EPC contractor, and those of major sub-contractors like Simplex, GDCL, UBEL, and Shapoorji Pallonji Construction Limited.
All those present on the occasion took the Safety Pledge, and thereafter workers in groups moved around the project site with banners, flags and placards displaying safety slogans and messages. Safety related programmes were organized through the week. One was “Surakhaya Kabacha,” an interesting drama presented by GKEL’s Safety Department inside the project premises.
