JAMSHEDPUR: In attempt to extend diagnosis and medical treatment facilities to the Birhor tribe, Tata Steel organized a Health Camp at Tatiba village, around 30 km from Noamundi Iron Mine under Noamundi block in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand today. Several Birhor tribesmen, residing in Tatiba village, are suffering from different diseases for the last few weeks and one such patient Soma Birhor was admitted to Tata Steel Hospital at Noamundi on 16 April by Smt. Geeta Koda, MLA, Jagannathpur. Soma Birhor is currently undergoing treatment in the Tata Steel Hospital at Noamundi. In view of disease prone Birhor tribesmen languishing, hon’ble MLA requested Tata Steel management to organize a health camp at the village to help the beleaguered tribesmen. Around 150 Birhor tribe family are residing in Tatiba village.
Responding to the situation Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) in association with Tata Steel Hospital at Noamundi organized the health camp in Swami Pranavananda Janm Shatabdi Adim Janjati Kalyan Kendra at Taiba, during which the Birhor villagers underwent health check-up and treatment. The beneficiaries are also provided with free medicines and on the spot blood test. It may be mentioned that the Birhor tirbe usually averse to undergoing formal treatment. Talking on the backwardness of fellow tribesmen Sri Dasrath Birhor, a youth in his 20s’ who has just completed his ITI diploma from a recognized institution, said that the fellow tribesmen are very afraid of undergoing or availing formal medical treatment for which they often suffer from various diseases.
During this health camp altogether 82 Birhor villagers underwent check-up and they were given requisite medicines free of cost. Most of these patients found to be suffering from malnutrition, worm infection, anaemia, malaria, skin diseases etc. During this camp Dr Hitendra Kumar, Dr (Mrs.) Anannya Pati, Dr Sumit Mishra from Tata Steel Hospital, Noamundi and Dr PK Mahanto from TSRDS, Noamundi treated the patients. Mr J Sandil, Unit Head, TSRDS, Noamundi supervised the camp.
This day long health camp was inaugurated by Smt. Geeta Koda, MLA, Jagannthpur and she extended her thanks to Tata Steel for responding to the situation. Ajay Tirkey, Block Development Officer (BDO), Noamundi was also present. Some other companies of this mining belt also participated in this camp by providing doctors and medicines.
It may be mentioned that extending medical facilities and diagnosis by Tata Steel in this mining belt is continuing since 1925 when Tata Steel Hospital was established. In FY 11-12 only, more than 56000 patients availed treatment in OPD at the hospital. Besides this on an average annually around 20 health camps are organized in villages and educational institutions around Noamundi, annual eye cure camp and family welfare camp is being conducted by the steel company for more than three decades at Noamundi and besides this health talk, blood donation camp, free eye check-up camp, diagnostic camps are also organized throughout the year in and around Noamundi to strengthen the health status of the people in this mining belt.
