Tata Steel Holds Convocation of Women Empowerment Programme

JAMSHEDPUR: Tata Steel held Annual Convocation ceremony of its women empowerment programme at Baridih community centre on May 9, 2012. Department of Urban Services, the social wing of Tata Steel, aims at uplifting and providing equal status to the women of the bustees through various ‘Women Empowerment” activities  like sewing and stitching, hand embroidery, machine embroidery, Mehendi Rachna, Zari work, beautician, fabric painting, etc.

Ms Srimanti Sen graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. She appreciated the initiatives of the Urban Services Department and bringing about a change, especially towards women folk and also suggested that this kind of programmes should be encouraged and more and more participation should be ensured. 78 students got certificates in various empowerment programmes.  All staff of Tata Steel, Urban Services was present on the occasion.

In another effort to uplift women, a similar programme was organized at Bagbera community centre on May 8, 2011. There are many illiterate and semi-literate women who need to earn money but don’t know the way. Tata Steel helps these women to become self-reliant and independent. Currently, the urban service, department of Tata Steel organizes sewing & stitching classes through its 12 community centres. This facilitates training of approx. 700 women every year

With these activities, the strength and capacities of women has increased in terms of positive thinking on the ability to make change, access to information and resources for taking decisions and ability to learn skills for improving their personal growth.

To further improve quality of life, Tata Steel has various training programmes conducted by Urban Services such as Sewing, Hand & Machine Embroidery, Fabric Painting, Zari etc. Tata Steel also organizes various training programmes regularly at the community centres.

Ms Laxmi Devi, Zila Parshad, Bagbera presided over the function as the Chief Guest and Mr Raj Kumar, Mukhiya, Bagbera Colony as the Guest of Honour. Ms Laxmi appreciated the initiatives of the Urban Services Department and especially towards women folk. All staff of Urban Services was present for this event. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks and cultural programme by the student.
