Tata Group Companies Celebrate the International Day for Indigenous People

JAMSHEDPUR:  The Tata group companies of Jharkhand (Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power and TINPLATE), in their endeavor to uplift the rural and tribal youth organized a two-month long U-16 football tournament. The finals were held today at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on the occasion of ‘International day for Indigenous people’.

The exciting finale was played between Team Adityapur and Team Tiruldih where the former emerged as the champions by defeating the latter by 3-1. The tournament drew participating teams across 32 locations in East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Boakro and Jamadoba. It was played between 500 teams wherein more than 8500 youths were involved.

The winner and the runner-up teams were awarded with shields. Team Chandil defeated Team Chowka to secure the third position. An exhibition match for women was also held between teams from Ranchi and Ghatshila. All the players were given track suits and kit bags.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest, Mr Bidyut Varan Mahato, MLA Bahragora, acknowledged the work done by Tata Steel for the welfare and upliftment of people living in rural areas. He also urged the Company to provide right direction to the youth who participated in the tournament so that they imbibe good qualities and become responsible citizen. Mr Sanjiv Paul reiterated the company’s commitment towards preserving Jharkhand’s ethnicity by promoting such ethnic games and congratulated the winners.

Corporate Sustainability Services, Tata Steel has been working long towards upliftment and improvement of rural and tribal youth. One of the ways to provide platform to these youth is to organize various sporting events to bring forth their hidden talents. The tournament has paved the way to identifying the hidden talents in remote hinterland of company’s operational areas and helped them to showcase their talent at this level.

Earlier Mr Biren Ramesh Bhuta, Chief, Corporate Sustainability Services, Tata Steel welcomed the participants. Mr Dinesh S Kudalkar, General Manager Tata Power, Mr Tarun Daga, Managing Direstor, TCIL, and Mr Vishwas Mohan Prasad, DM Tata Motor, were the Guests of Honour. Captain Amitabh, Head – Sports Department, Tata Steel proposed the final vote of thanks.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (9 August) was first proclaimed by the General Assembly in December 1994, to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995 – 2004).  In 2004, the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade, from 2005 – 2015, with the theme of “A Decade for Action and Dignity.”

The focus of this year’s International Day is “Indigenous Media, Empowering Indigenous Voices”.

The theme aims to highlight the importance of indigenous media in challenging stereotypes, forging indigenous peoples’ identities, communicating with the outside world, and influencing the social and political agenda. A special event at UN Headquarters in New York on 9 August will feature speakers and videos of indigenous media organizations, with a live webcast. On Twitter, use #UNIndigenousDay for regular updates and for sending questions to panel members in the days leading up to and during the event.
