New Delhi: Coca-Cola India, the leading beverages company in India, today organized a free movie retreat for 200 waste pickers from across Delhi in association with Chintan, an NGO working in the area of waste management and DT Cinemas. The movie retreat was a part of Coca-Cola’s drive to celebrate ‘Daanutsav’ week, wherein, 70 associates from the company worked hand-in-hand over a week with waste pickers at the New Delhi Railway Station, picking up PET bottles from platforms and trains.
The initiative was undertaken by Coca-Cola India, in line with its core CSR values of inspiring optimism and happiness in communities. Through this initiative, the company also spread the message that every individual of the society can make a huge difference to benefit the environment, in a unique way.
Speaking on the occasion, Chitra Mukherjee, Manager, Chintan said, “Waste pickers serve a crucial role in waste management system and are the backbone of the recycling industry in India, recycling 20% of all the waste the city generates, but their role is overlooked and they are marginalized by the society. We urgently need to recognize these workers who clean the streets every single day, by foot, door to door, collecting recyclable materials as a service to the society and to the environment. This is a great initiative to encourage them to keep up their work and provide widespread benefits to the communities, ultimately benefiting the environment.”
