NEW DELHI: P. Uma Shankar, Secretary, Ministry of Power inaugurated the “REC-Amar Seva Sangam Integrated Training and Development Centre for physically Challenged” at Amar Seva Sangam, campus on 13 Feb 2012 at Ayikudy in Tirunelveli District of Chennai. Rajeev Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd. (REC); Vinod Behari, Executive Director, REC, New Delhi and a host of other state dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
Constructed under the REC Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the facility is a large barrier-free training hall with an area of 5897 sq.ft specially designed for easy access for persons with disabilities, and will accommodate about 150 trainees at a time.
The facility, together with necessary equipments has been constructed at a cost of Rs.60 lakhs and can be divided into three smaller halls with collapsible partitions. Depending upon the training schedule and the number of participants, programs can be conducted to maximise the utilization.
REC is a NAVRATNA Central Public Sector Enterprise under Ministry of Power and finances entire power sector infrastructure including rural electrification projects, all over the country. REC has its Corporate Office in New Delhi and over 17 Project Offices located in most of the states. This project was coordinated by the REC Project Office at Chennai which takes care of the REC operations in the State of Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry.
In the state of Tamil Nadu, since its inception in 1969 and up to the fiscal year 2011, REC has sanctioned 3,824 No. of projects worth Rs.29,108 crores and disbursed loan assistance of Rs.14,700 crore for implementation of power sector projects in the State of Tamil Nadu.
Amar Seva Sangam is a well acclaimed premier voluntary organization in the field of disability management. Their focus is mainly on rural areas and their approach is to establish a centralized resource center and act as a catalyst for change in the development of physically and mentally challenged. Amar Seva Sangam has formulated a number of accredited training programs which will go a long way in mainstreaming the differently-abled persons.
These include
(i) Certificate course in Foundation Course on Children’s with Disabilities (FCED) under IGNOU
(ii) Rehabilitation certificate courses with the recognition of Rehab Council of India such as Certificate Course in Care Giving (CCCG); Certificate Course in Prosthetics & Orthotic (CPO); PG Diploma in Development Therapy (PGDT); Diploma in Community Based Rehabilitation (DCBR); Diploma in Early Childhood Special Education (Mental Retardation); BPO training through tie-up with Edu-Bridge Foundation (NSDC –Certificate from Govt. of Tamilnadu); Home Appliances Training – MSPVL Polytechnic College, Pavoorchatram (Certificate from Ministry of Human Resource Development Central Government); Training in Mobile Phone Servicing; Advanced Accountancy Courses etc. Apart from the above trainings, the Sangam is also planning to conduct Corporate Training, Block Placement, Internship, Seminars and Workshops.
