MUMBAI: Chaitali Galakhe, the bride from Maharashtra who shot into limelight after demanding a ‘Toilet‘ as her wedding gift over other luxury items, will now be rewarded for her inspiring approach. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) Sulabh International would reward her with a cash of Rs 10 lakh. Sulabh International’s representative Bindeshwar Pathak announced the decision on Sunday.
Chaitali who hails from Andura village in Balapur tehsil of Akola district had demanded a toilet from her family as wedding gift instead of any other luxury items. She was said to have been inspired by ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan’ (Clean Indian Mission) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of his cleanliness drive.
Announcing the reward, Bindeshwar Pathak said that Chaitali is a great inspiration and he sees her as a messenger of sanitation. “She is an inspiration. What she has done is commendable. I can name her as ‘messenger of sanitation’ and thus we have decided to reward her so that others can also be encouraged” said Pathak.
He also appreciated the Prime Minister’s campaign for motivating common people towards the necessity of sanitation and cleanliness. “Actually, it’s an achievement also for the Prime Minister in my view as the concept was unique” he further added.
“I came to know that there is no toilet at my in-laws house a few days after my marriage was fixed. So I told my father and uncle to provide a toilet as I think it is more useful than any other items given for marriage and they fulfilled my request. They got a pre-fabricated toilet for me that was installed at my in-laws house” Chaitali informed.
Chaitali Galakhe was married to Devendra Makode May 15 at Andura village in Akola situated in Yavatmal district.
