JAMSHEDPUR: Tata Steel in association with mjunction held a MET (Movement for bringing about Efficiency and Transparency) conference, a platform to recognize people who have transcended barriers of bureaucracy, inefficiency and opacity, on 9th December, 2011 at Tata Auditorium, XLRI.
Mjunction believes that after having ushered in transparency and efficiency to the Steel and Coal Supply Chains in India, there is no reason why the same success cannot be replicated across all aspects of governance, corporate and social life. Hence, at each of its MET conferences, it proposes to invite some of the world’s most committed visionaries to share their perspective on how to carry forth transparency to pave a new world order.
The movement was given a heady start by change agents who believe and spoke on the theme ‘Transparency- the key to an ever flourishing society’. The panelists included Mr Ajay Chaturvedi, champion of socio-economic reform in rural India; Avalok Langer, conflict reporter and member team Tehelka; Mehmood Khan, social transformation champion and former global leader of innovation process development at Unilever; Vijay Anand, software engineer and corruption crusader; Vivek Gilani, founder, mumbaivotes.com.
While addressing the audience Mr HM Nerurkar, Managing Director, Tata Steel Ltd said, “To ensure that the production and distribution systems as well as greater structures around us work quickly and efficiently, we must emphasise on a couple of things. The first and foremost is to ensure that we collect information by involving all relevant stakeholders, and then share it later with all of them, in an open manner, with an open mind. This will enable us to take fact-based decisions.”
Mr Nerurkar further added that “entrepreneurship and innovation will be the next milestones in ensuring efficiency. The past decade of India’s growth is the best testimony to this fact“. He added that “resourcefulness in utilisation of resources” is the final factor that can go a long way in ensuring transparency in the system.
Mr Viresh Oberoi, Managing Director and founder Chief Executive Officer, mjunction services limited, welcoming the panelists said that after working and creating value for customers, they had a feeling to do something for the greater good of the community. So they created ejunction, a corporate social sustainability initiative. In its 10th year of existence, mjunction has introduced MET, a platform for people to portray what they have achieved in terms of transparency and efficiency, so that we could join and emulate them.
According to panelist Mr Ajay Chaturvedi, “Transparency and Efficiency are drivers of real growth and development. More of these will take us closer to the real value of the society, systems and innovation. Transparency and Efficiency also help us in low costs innovations which is the need of the under developed economy across the world.” In a similar line Mr Mehamood Khan believes that if India has to achieve its true potential we have to make these two words as the buzz words to bring trust, confidence and mission driven approach which delivers to the planned Key Performance Indicators.
A non-profit and neutral movement, MET attempts to ‘Recognize, Reward and Replicate’ models on creating efficiency and transparency in society and businesses. The entire movement was kick started at the MET conference organized on August 19, 2011. This movement would not have been successful without momentum of the team of mjunction. Moreover, the impetus does not stop there as a part of their long term plans; they intend to make MET a nation-wide initiative and intend to take it to other metros as well as other smaller cities.
