The Swacch Bhart Abhiyan is an urge and requirement of time. The program can be seen as a great medium to achieve nation a beautiful place to live. The hygiene and clean environment is required for betterment of human across country. Here the focus has been done to have a positive link of 5 S concept and its utility for achieving the target of Swacch Bhart in a very systematic and effective manner through this proven principle.
Importance of Cleanliness and The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
As we know the cleanliness and waste management in an efficient manner is required for a developing nation like our. The fact is that if we are talking about the development of world class infrastructure and facilities to change our nation, this aspect can be ignored at any cost.
With a very bright thought a national campaign by the Government of India hab been launched under the name The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan go by Honorable Prime minister on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi. The campaign will cover 40-41 statutory towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country in phase wise manner. Already 2 surveys are done on national level and about 20 cities are ranked in the top position recently.
Brief introduction of 5S
5S is a proved Japanese technique which involves the principle of waste elimination through workplace organization. This constitutes the core elements of “lean thinking” and a “visual workplace”. It provides the foundation for all quality improvement programs & improvised work culture.
For the benefit of all readers, I am giving the basics of concepts in brief.
Seiri (1S): The step involves Sorting/Putting things in order (remove/discard what is not needed amd only keep the required material/items).
Seiton (2S): This step involves orderliness or proper arrangement in the principal of “There must be a place for everything, and everything must be in its place.”
Seiso (3S): Once the step 1 and 2 are decided, the phase of cleaning starts clean/cleanliness. This can be regarded as the backbone for the movement of The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The main agenda here is to keep workplace and things clean and polished and no place for trash or dirt.
Seiketsu (4S): Without standardization one can not attain any target may it be personal, organizational or national, this step calls for Standardize once initial phase of 3S are completed.
Shitsuke (5S): Sustaining/discipline/commitment and maintaining standards is the essence of time to have a succesful completion of the concept. This step involves the entire cultural change or upgrade for the individual and organization.
Link between Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and 5S
As Seen by my corporate experience in various organizations during the last 23 years, I have been closely involved in the concepts of 5S and housekeeping by virtue of technical experience and opportunity to work in business excellence domain function.
The feel or experience which always strike to me, is that why we can not have a proper handshake/alignment of this two aspect for the betterment and reaching to the goal of Swacch Bharat with a great impact.
I can see the concept of 5S as an effective and dynamic tool for achieving what has been dreamt Mahatma Gandhi and at present guided by our honorable Prime Minister.
The concept of 5S can be effectively used by for the purpose by:
1. Spreading the awareness in all class of office employess, schools, Govt oraganization.
2. Training to specific key executives in all the above institutes.
3. Exposure in the various national/international level conferences and seminars to the key persons.
The concept of 5S if linked properly can result in an achievement of Swachh Bharat noble campaign and expected cultural change.
