MANESWAR: Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday directed the Manesar workers to vacate the factory premises immediately, said RC Bhargava, chairman, Maruti Suzuki.

“We will comply with the HC order and start to evict the sit-in workers at Manesar from Friday, in case they don’t vacate the plant on their own,” SS Deswal, police commissioner of Gurgaon told Financial Chronicle.

While little police presence was seen at the factory during this week due to Haryana bypolls taking place on Thursday, the police may use ‘force’ to end the labour trouble for Maruti Suzuki at Manesar plant taking place since June this year. “We have been regularly monitoring the Manesar plant and preventing workers from damaging property in the factory premises,” Deswal added.

Meanwhile, a Maruti Suzuki spokesman said that the Haryana labour department has declared the strike as illegal. “The company has asserted that only after the plant premises are vacated, it would consider any talks (with workers) on the issue,” the spokesman added.

Four-hour long mass protests at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant were carried out on Thursday, where more than 7,000 workers from various unions joining the procession. “We will carry out demonstrations on October 17, Monday in Manesar and simultaneously observe two-hour tool down strike if normalcy is not restored in coming days. If the police intervenes and arrests workers at Manesar, immediate action will be taken including slowdown of work across Manesar-Gurgaon belt,” said DL Sachdev, national secretary, Aituc (all India trade union congress).

Maruti Suzuki will stop production on Friday and Saturday at its Gurgaon plant, leading to a complete halt in production at the largest carmaker for the first time since 11 years. “This is in view of the non-availability of components for the cars,” the company spokesman said.
